Academics look at slot machine noise
Here's another piece of news that shows just how much of a mystery casinos https://pokiesurf-australia.com/ are to science. Recently, the University of Waterloo in Canada has been looking at the sounds made by slot machines.
The aim of the study was to prove that the decibels of slot machines have an influence on players and make them bet more even if they lose money. For this purpose, the academics selected two groups: group 1 and group 2.
Group 1 benefited from the auditory part of the machines as they were given sounds when they won and even when they won "falsely" (i.e. when they won less than their stake).
Group 2 played silently and the wins were displayed on the screen as well as the losses. Well, the results were not long in coming, as Group 1 had an increased sense of confidence and victory even though they sometimes lost.
The explanation is quite simple as the sound of winning the Jackpot is extremely high, so when the sound is low it is considered a win but a smaller amount. This is reminiscent of the experiment already carried out in supermarkets where it was found that, depending on the melody played by the loudspeakers, consumers went shopping more or less quickly.
In any case, we are back to Pavlov, where in the end it is enough to assimilate the sound of victory even to a loss for people to think they are winning. So if money has no smell, it makes noise, and we gamblers prefer the sound of cash to the more stealthy sound of notes.
